I actually do not understand what is so wrong in Ross character to be hated so much. And, because of that, ship another couple that did not make sense at all. When Emily left Ross that voice mail wondering whether they’d made a mistake getting a divorce, Rachel told him about it even though Monica wanted to keep it from him. She helped Ross realise that he didn’t want to talk to Emily and he was very thankful to her. Their sweet and heartfelt moments get constantly overlooked for their drama, but their drama is also what drove the show. If Joey and Rachel were the main couple of the show, I can guarantee you they would’ve been written the exact same way and you’d all be hating on Joey, not Ross.

TV shows thrive off of conflict, and in an earnest, down-to-earth, low-stakes show like FRIENDS, you need a conflict to stop your love interest from getting together. Personality clashes based on not being in the same place at the same time, which translate to incompatibility. I think if the writers knew they had a few more seasons they could of prepared and worked on ross and Rachel again and built it up to a good ending instead of having to rush it.
